Wetlands, estuaries, and coastal areas

Wetlands, estuaries, and coastal areas, which play a crucial role in supporting a vast number of species, are particularly vulnerable to climate change. Already pressured by human activity, these ecosystems will be further stressed by the more extreme, yet less reliable, precipitation and temperature regimes resulting from the warmer climate. Protecting these sites must be a high priority for communities.

Adaptation options for minimizing the adverse impacts of climate change on these ecosystems include the reduction of current anthropogenic stresses, allowing for inland migration of coastal wetlands as sea-level rises, active management to preserve wetland hydrology, and a wide range of other management and restoration options.

Our experts quantify the risks to the wetlands in your stewardship, and work with you to develop strategies, procedures, timelines, and resource requirements for minimizing the impacts of climate change.
